Three dress rehearsals, three shows, eight dances; and one more show as a stage assistant.
Five years ago, I sat in the audience and watched Avery’s ballet class perform without her. She was paralyzed with fear and couldn’t bring herself to step on stage. There was no redeeming herself the following year as the world was shut down from COVID. The following year, 2021, the world was slowly recovering, the “recital” was a typical class in costumes. Avery had a foot injury in 2022 so while her Pre-point class performed in the spring ballet, Avery was on stage only as a tree and for her bow. Last year, 2023, four years after Avery’s stage fright incident, she finally performed on stage….I remember holding my breath at her first competition, praying that she would come out with her dance team. She did, and she did many times after that the remainder of the year with additional competitions, a spring ballet, and multiple performances in the recital.
I no longer “worry” about her getting on stage. She gets up on stage each time dancing her heart out and I just sit back and enjoy.
